Boost the A's

Researchers have understood the importance of Vitamin A for the immune system for a while. But now we're learning that Vitamin A is also necessary for the hippocampus, which Salk Institute researcher Sharoni Jacobs calls "the main seat of learning."

And as is the case with most vitamins, our kids simply aren't getting enough. A study at the Salk Institute showed that removing Vitamin A from mice diminished their memory and learning potential. However, when it was reintroduced, then "the detrimental effects of Vitamin A deprivation [were] remarkably reversible, which offers hope to the millions of children worldwide with Vitamin A-deficient diets." And since it's abundant in tasty fruits like cantaloupe, watermelon and papaya, it shouldn't be too tough to boost those A's!
